Family Story

Donald's New Tune

When Donald suddenly lost his mother, he was ripped from the only world he knew.  He had lived with her in seclusion his entire life and lacked the living skills necessary for a successful placement in traditional housing options.  Donald slept on the floor, did not know how to shower or properly use the bathroom, ate with his hands, and had virtually no experiences beyond the walls of his home.

Today, thanks to the loving care of his Mentors, Sheryll and Angel Francisco, Donald has a new lease on life.  With open arms, an understanding smile and endless patience, the Franciscos have welcomed Donald into their family and increased his life skills beyond anyone’s expectations.  Despite little connection to the outside world, Donald had good verbal skills but needed guidance with everyday social interaction that most of us take for granted.  The Franciscos, who are natural teachers and Mentors, helped Donald improve his social and independent living skills, build relationships and achieve new goals.

With Sheryll and Angel’s support, Donald, who is a talented musician and artist, has become a polite and social man who enjoys interacting with his family, friends, and neighbors.  Now an active member of the community, Donald can often be found singing and playing his guitar for local audiences and showcasing his paintings at art shows.

Being a part of the Host-Home program and living with his Mentors has given Donald the opportunity to do things he’s never done before – and most importantly he’s part of a healthy, happy family home.
